Djibouti cuts diplomatic ties with Iran

Xinhua, January 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

Djibouti government on Wednesday announced it had cut diplomatic ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran over the recent attack on the Saudi Arabia Embassy in Tehran.

The statement signed by Djibouti's Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said the decision was taken "in solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and in response to the declarations of the spokesman of Iran's foreign ministry.

"The decision comes in response to the ironic and aggressive statements by Iran's foreign ministry which demeaned Djibouti's support for Saudi Arabia," the statement said.

"Djibouti calls on Iranian authorities to meet its international obligations that stipulate strict respect for sovereignty of state and non-interference in their internal affairs," the statement concluded. Enditem
