Burkina Faso, Belgium restore diplomatic ties

Xinhua, January 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

Diplomatic ties between Burkina Faso and Belgium, suspended after last September's failed coup, have been restored, Belgium's Deputy Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said on Wednesday in Ouagadougou.

"Belgium is ready to resume the partnership we had in the past and restart cooperation between the two countries," De Croo said after meeting with Burkina Faso President Roch Marc Christian Kabore.

"We intend, for a start, to get involved in three key areas which include access to clean water, reproductive health for women and food security as well as agricultural development," the Belgian minister said.

After 13 months of transition, Burkina Faso organized successful free and fair elections that were won by Kabore, a professional banker and former confidant of ex-president Blaise Compaore.

Kabore was sworn in as president on Dec. 29, 2015, in the presence of about ten African presidents in Ouagadougou. Enditem
