Numbers of visitors to France's Louvre Museum down 6.4 pct in 2015

Xinhua, January 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

France received 6.4 percent less visitors to its landmark Louvre Museum last year compared to a year earlier as terror attacks that struck the French capital twice in 2015 kept visitors away, data released by Louvre Museum showed on Wednesday.

For the whole year of 2015, Louvre, one of the world's largest museums and one of France's main historic monument, welcomed 8.7 million visitors, down from 9.3 million recorded in 2014.

"Tragic events in January and November had an impact on the attendance of national and school visitors," the statement said, adding the number of French visitors fell by 28.3 percent to stand at 1.85 million over the period compared to 2014 data.

Despite the terror attacks that clouded the atmosphere in Paris' vibrant venues, Louvre Museum remained the main visited French site by foreign tourists which represent 78 percent of the total number of visitors.

The lion share of Louvre visitors came from the United States followed by China from where 86 percent more people visited the museum last year. Enditem
