Arab League to discuss Palestinian bid to UNSC next week: official

Xinhua, January 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

An Arab League meeting will discuss in Cairo next week a Palestinian bid to the UN Security Council (UNSC) amid flaring violence between the Palestinians and Israel, a senior Palestinian official said on Wednesday.

Arab foreign ministers are likely to attend the meeting, Saeb Erekat, secretary general of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), told Voice of Palestine radio.

The meeting will also tackle the latest developments in the Palestinian territories and the current violent tensions between the Israelis and the Palestinians, Erekat said.

Erekat, who is currently in Cairo, met on Tuesday with Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi and Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.

The Arabs and Egypt supports the Palestinian bid to the UN Security Council, he added.

Also, Palestinian Foreign Minister Reyad al-Malki is visiting France as part of ongoing efforts to lobby for the Palestinian bid to the UN for full recognition of a Palestinian state.

The Palestinian moves come as a current wave of violence between the Palestinians and Israel has killed more than 120 Palestinians and 21 Israelis since it broke out in October last year.

The violence started in East Jerusalem, triggered by increasing visits of far-right Israelis to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, a site holy to both Muslims and Jews, and then quickly spread throughout the West Bank, Israel, and the Gaza Strip. Endit
