India to release Bollywood actor from jail in 1993 Mumbai blasts case

Xinhua, January 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

India is to release Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, serving prison term for his role in 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, next month.

The 56-year-old actor will be released on Feb. 27 from Yerwada jail in the western state of Maharashtra's city of Pune, some days ahead of his scheduled release, sources said Wednesday.

In fact, Dutt, who was convicted under the country's Arms Act for illegally acquiring weapons during the 1993 blasts, will be released because of his "good behavior", the sources said.

The actor was initially sentenced to six years in jail in 2007, but after serving 18 months in a jail, he was released on bail pending appeal in a higher court.

In March 2013, he was ordered by the higher court to serve the remainder of his sentence for his role in the Mumbai serial blasts in which nearly 300 people were killed. Endit
