The torchlight procession for New Year celebration in Edinburgh or Edinburgh's Hogmanay was held peacefully and safely Wednesday night to welcome the year of 2016.

Donald Wilson, Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh, joined the estimated 10,000 torchbearers and pipe bands at the start of the procession in the city center, while about 30,000 spectators watched the event along the route and the fireworks display later.

The strong wind and mild rain in the morning receded in the evening in time to ensure the nearly two-hour outdoor event with a happy ending.

The presence of police and ambulance staff was aimed to keep the procession, bonfire and people secure and in order.

About 8,000 pounds (11,840 U.S. dollars) was raised through torch sale for the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) New Year's Resolution to help children whose lives have been turned upside down by the conflict in Syria.

The procession will be followed by Thursday's Concert in the Gardens and firework displays. 75,000 people are planned to join hands to sing Auld Lang Syne on New Year's Eve.

The celebrations will continue on New Year's Day with free activities open to citizens.

Tickets for the celebrations have been purchased from over 80 countries, according to Pete Irvine, Director of Unique Events who have produced Edinburgh's Hogmanay on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council since 1993. Endit
