Year of 2015 among warmest in Netherlands

The annual average temperature in the Netherlands in 2015 was among the highest since 1901, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) announced on Wednesday.

The year 2015 was placed at joint fifth place with an average annual temperature in De Bilt, where the KNMI is located, of 10.9 degrees Celsius, compared to an average of 10.1 since consistent measurements started in 1901. Last year, 2014, was the warmest year ever with an average of 11.7 degrees Celsius recorded.

The year of 2015 finished with an extremely mild month of November, while December has never been so warm since the beginning of the regular temperature observations in 1706.

In December 2015 the average temperature was 9.5 degrees Celsius. Up to now, the mildest December was in 1974, with an average of 7.3 degrees.

This year the Netherlands had only one day with the temperature below the freezing point, on January 23. On that day also the lowest minimum temperature in the country was measured: minus 8.8 degrees Celsius in Wijk aan Zee, on the coast.

The warmest day was on July 2, with 38.2 degrees measured in Maastricht in the southern province of Limburg, just below the record of 38.6 in Warnsveld from 1944. Endit
