Rio to have special New Year fireworks show featuring Olympic Games

Xinhua, December 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Rio's traditional New Year fireworks show will pay homage to the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in the city, the official Agencia Brasil news agency said Tuesday.

The city has one of the most traditional New Year parties in the world. Every year, millions of people gather in Rio's beaches, most of them in the world-renowned Copacabana Beach, to celebrate the arrival of the new year. Free music concerts are usually held at the main beaches.

This year, a musical on the history of samba will be staged for the first time at Copacabana's party. To mark the beginning of the Olympic year, the countdown to 2016 will be specially designed.

Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes said, "We are sure this moment will start a very special time for our city."

Rio is expected to receive 850,000 tourists for the New Year holiday, which, along with Carnival, is the most important event for the local tourism sector. Endi
