Russia to manufacture Kamov helicopters in India

Xinhua, December 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Russia's Rostech State Corporation has signed a deal with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to manufacture Kamov helicopters in India, India's official broadcaster - All India Radio (AIR) said Wednesday.

The deal, estimated to be worth 1 billion U.S. dollars, is aimed at manufacturing 200 Kamov 226T light helicopters in India, a move to replace India's ageing fleet of Cheetah and Chetak.

The broadcaster, quoting CEO of Rostech Sergei Chemezov, said the helicopter manufacturing will be done by Russian-Indian joint venture.

This is the first Russian-Indian high-tech project implemented by the Indian government within the framework of its "Make in India" program.

The agreement on cooperation in helicopter manufacturing was reached during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Moscow.

"According to the deal, Rostech will organize the production of Russian Kamov 226T and its modifications in India," the broadcaster said. "The agreement also provides for maintenance, operation and repair of helicopters."
