UN chief calls on CAR stakeholders to ensure peaceful elections

Xinhua, December 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

On the eve of the presidential and legislative elections in Central African Republic (CAR), UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday called on all national stakeholders to ensure the elections are conducted in a peaceful and credible manner.

CAR is set to hold legislative and presidential elections on Wednesday, after a Dec. 13 referendum that favored a new constitution. The new constitution limits the president's tenure to two terms and reins in armed militias.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Ban urged the political stakeholders to cooperate with the UN peacekeeping mission in CAR, MINUSCA, "to prevent any possible disruption of the electoral process."

The UN chief also called on them to resolve disputes that may arise from the elections through legal and peaceful means in full respect of the adopted code of conduct.

The elections are expected to restore law and order in the African country after a mainly Muslim rebellion in 2013. MINUSCA was set up in 2014 to help bring peace in the country after a breakdown of governmental authority and vicious intercommunal fighting. Endi
