Sarajevo government has decided to take measures to fight persistent smog, including a traffic ban on cargo vehicles in certain areas in the city, local media reported on Tuesday.
The measures will take effect on midnight Wednesday in a bid to reduce air pollution, with a ban on the use of vehicles whose engines are built below the standard EURO 3 as well as introduction of enhanced controls by traffic police officers.
The measures will not apply to police vehicles, inspection vehicles, vehicles of Ministry of Defense, public transport as well as cars with diplomatic plates and emergency vehicles.
Also, cargo vehicles with the total weight of more than 3.5 tons will not allowed to travel on the certain areas in central Sarajevo except from 10:00 to 15:00 and from 00:00 to 06:00 local time.
Sarajevo had been covered with heavy smog for most part of the past several weeks. Heavy fog and smog are not uncommon in Sarajevo, which lies in a basin surrounded by mountains. The problem becomes more serious in winter when many residents burn coal or wood for heating. Enditem
