12 feared trapped in building collapse near Mumbai

Xinhua, December 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least 12 people were feared trapped in a building that collapsed near Mumbai in the wee hours of Tuesday, a senior police official said.

"The double-storey building collapsed in Bhiwandi around 5 a.m. (local time). No casualty has been reported yet and efforts are on to rescue those trapped under the debris," he said.

Local TV channels reported a few of those have been pulled out of the debris and rushed to hospital where the condition of some are said to be serious.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official added.

The latest incident came a day after six labourers were killed and more than 12 others injured in an under-construction building collapse in the central government-controlled territory of Chandigarh.

Building collapses are common in India because of poor construction practices, mostly fuelled by the need for low-cost housing by the country's growing middle-class. Endit
