Brussels' taxis to be equipped with credit card reader

Xinhua, December 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

All the Brussels' taxis will be equipped with a credit card reader from January 1, 2016, according to Taxis Plan 2015-2019 of Brussels' Ministry of Transport.

Checks will be made on the ground and sanctions could be taken in case of non-compliance with the obligation, confirmed Monday the regional administration of taxis.

The measure aims to provide a new payment method for taxi customers in the Belgian capital, those who often criticize the lack of this online terminal aboard taxis, reported the public television RTBF.

"Mandating credit card payment is a good thing ... It means also that customers can pay by credit card all the time," said the head of the Taxis Verts confederation, Michel Petre.

There are about 1300 taxis in Brussels, more than half of which are already equipped with the reader in the past two years, said RTBF.

However, some taxi drivers took false terminal failure as excuses for refusing payment by card, because the reader inevitably leaves a trace of the transaction and they can not "drive an unlicensed cab".

Other taxi drivers want to bypass the costs involved in the conclusion of card payment (minimum 2 percent), added RTBF. Endit
