Philippine senator appeals against disqualificatin of presidential bid

Xinhua, December 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

Senator Grace Poe on Monday asked the Philippine Supreme Court to reverse a decision of the poll body disqualifying her to run for next year's elections.

In her petition before the court, Poe, a leading presidential aspirant based on recent survey, expressed confidence that the justices would protect the rights of foundling like her to run for public office.

"My lawyers have put forward strong evidence, relevant court discussions and principles, and jurisprudence that would show that I am a natural born Filipino with at least 10 years residency in the Philippines," she said.

The Commission on Elections has barred Poe from seeking the presidency for not meeting the constitutional requirements of being a natural-born Filipino and the 10-year residency in the country.

Poe, adopted by a couple of famous actor and actress in the Philippines, does not know her real parents and she was an American citizen before she became a senator. Endit
