Egypt court sentences MB chief to 10 years over violence and murder

Xinhua, December 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

An Egyptian military court sentenced on Tuesday Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie and two other senior leaders to 10 years in prison for murder and inciting violence, state-run news agency Ahram-online reported.

The charges stem from violence in the northeastern city of Suez that came in the aftermath of security forces' deadly dispersal of a sit-in in Cairo by the supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi that left hundreds dead in August 2013.

90 co-defendants were given life sentences, which amounts to 25 years in Egypt, in the same case. 56 others were sentenced in absentia between 3 to 7 years in jail, and 50 were acquitted.

Mohamed Badie has faced numerous trials and has been handed two death sentences and five life sentences in separate cases, which still can be appealed.

Morsi was ousted by the army in 2013 after mass protests against his one-year rule. Since then, thousands of his supporters and MB members have been jailed, and hundreds have received death sentences. Endit
