UAE police seizes Iranian ship loaded with drugs

Xinhua, December 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Interior said Tuesday the Gulf state's authorities seized 11.5kilograms of hashish and 142,725 illegal pills onboard an Iranian ship in Port Khalid in the emirate of Sharjah, UAE state news agency WAM reported.

The ministry said the operation was executed by a team from federal anti-narcotics departments and Sharjah Police, in cooperation with other concerned authorities.

Colonel Saeed Al-Suwaidi, Director-General of the Anti-Narcotics Federal Directorate-General at the Ministry of Interior, said the raid uncovered large quantities of narcotic substances hidden in caches on the boat. UAE border police also arrested 10 people, "some of which were Iranian citizens."

Al-Suwaidi added that two of the men who were apprehended were hiding in a tank and were found unconscious due to the lack of oxygen and high temperatures.

Sharjah is the northern neighbor sheikhdom of Dubai. The UAE is traditionally a close trading partner of the Islamic Republic of Iran and considered Iran's gateway to global products. Endit
