U.S. president to open high-level meeting at UN on refugees in September: envoy

Xinhua, December 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

U.S. President Barack Obama plans to open a high-level meeting on refugees in September 2016 at the United Nations, when world leaders will be here to attend the annual high-level debate of the UN General Assembly.

Samantha Power, the U.S. UN ambassador who holds the rotating council presidency for December, made the statement here Monday as a massive influx of refugees were reported in Africa, the Middle East and Europe over the past months.

The U.S. plan needs to be coordinated with the United Nations, which does not make response to it at the press time.

The United States is one of the five permanent members of the 15-nation Security Council, the other four veto-wielding members are Britain, China, France and Russia. Enditem
