UN chief concerned over rocket firing from Lebanon towards Israel

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday expressed concerns over firing of rockets from South Lebanon towards Israel, calling it a serious ceasefire violation.

On Sunday, three rockets were fired from the outskirts of the southern port city of Tyre towards Israel. The Israeli army retaliated by shelling the southern towns of Qolaile and al-Mansouri.

UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was investigating the incident in cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Israel Defense Forces, according to a statement released by Ban's spokesperson.

"The Secretary-General condemns any and all violations of resolution 1701 and urges all concerned to exercise maximum restraint and cooperate with UNIFIL in order to prevent an escalation," said the statement.

Resolution 1701 ended the 33-day devastating war between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006.

"The parties must fully adhere to resolution 1701 and respect the cessation of hostilities," said the statement.

"The United Nations is committed to continuing to work with the parties to ensure that the calm that has prevailed in southern Lebanon continues to be sustained," it added. Enditem
