EU to provide 76.09 mln USD for food, nutrition security in Myanmar

Xinhua, December 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Union will provide additional 70 million euro (76.09 mln USD) to help enhance food and nutrition security, improve the rule of law and establish peace in Myanmar, according to a release of EU on Monday.

Under the provision, EU will contribute to reducing poverty and improving food and nutrition security through a new aquaculture program, the release said.

EU will continue their support to the reform of the police in its transition into a modern police service.

They will increase their support for efforts to achieve a lasting peace.

Since the start of reforms in 2011, the EU has lifted sanctions, allocated substantial funding, initiated programs and encouraged further reforms, said EU Ambassador to Myanmar Roland Kobia.

The Myanmar Sustainable Aquaculture Program, or MYSAP, is a 20-million-euro commitment to reduce poverty and improve food security and nutrition, the release said.

Another 30-million-euro fund is allocated to strengthen the rule of law and transform Myanmar Police Force into an effective, efficient and accountable police service which respects human rights and fundamental freedoms and applies best international practices.

Peace Support in Myanmar, a 20-million-euro commitment, aims at further supporting the ongoing peace process.

It will contribute to lasting peace, security and sustainable development by supporting the joint ceasefire monitoring mechanism, the national political dialogue and mechanisms for socio-economic recovery in conflict-affected areas, it said. Endit
