Deadly road accident kills 8 in Algeria

Xinhua, December 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

A total of eight were killed in a traffic accident on Sunday on a highway connecting the provinces of Djelfa and Laghouat, about 350 km south of capital Algiers.

According to a report of the firefighting department, the accident occurred when the transport vehicle, carrying eight people, collided with a trailer, adding that all of the passengers were killed on spot, while a ninth person was seriously injured.

The exact circumstances of the accident are yet to be identified by police, although such tragic accidents have become common on the roads of the southern part of Algeria. Breaking speed limit and fatigue driving, after performing a daily non-stop 1000 km distance, are blamed for these recurrent deadly accidents.

Between 4,000 and 4,500 people were killed every year in traffic accidents, according to official figures. A driving license's demerit point system is yet to become effective, a step to curb the soaring number of deadly road accidents. Endit
