Lebanon arrests 2 IS members

Xinhua, December 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Lebanese General Security Directorate said Saturday that it has arrested two members of the Islamic State (IS) group, one of whom confessed to be an official "emir" for the northern Lebanon district of Akkar.

The General Security said in a statement that "the two, identified as B.F. and Aa.M., were arrested on charges of forming a cell working to serve the interests of a terror organization."

"The two suspects admitted to working at the behest of the IS," it added.

According to the statement, B.F said he was the legal emir of IS in Akkar and was responsible for recruiting Lebanese nationals to join its ranks by establishing armed groups to conduct terror operations using explosive belts.

The suspects were plotting against security centers, military checkpoints and security and military figures.

The IS claimed responsibility of the blast that rocked the Burj al-Barajneh suburb in southern Beirut where Hezbollah enjoys wide support last month, killing 47 people and wounding over 200. Endit
