China values ties with Libya, eyes for cooperation: ambassador

Xinhua, December 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

China hopes the new UN-brokered deal will soon address the political conflicts in Libya and eyes for further cooperation with the country, Chinese Ambassador to Libya Li Zhiguo said in a recent interview with Xinhua.

Li made the remarks after rival Libyan factions signed a historical deal on Thursday aiming to restart the political transition in the North African country.

The ambassador said the Chinese government is highly concerned by the political conflict in Libya and hopes it will be resolved soon. He added the only solution is through dialogue and opposed violence of any sort.

Libya has descended into chaos following the 2011 toppling of its longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi. The oil-rich country was torn between an internationally recognized government in the east and an Islamist-backed authority in the capital Tripoli.

On Thursday, Libya's conflicting parties signed a UN-brokered agreement in Skhirat, Morocco, pledging to form a government of national accord and end the political division.

Li said China has been actively supporting the UN-mediated dialogue since its start in September, 2014, and has provided humanitarian aids in August and September in 2015, for which China has received high appreciation from the Libyan people as well as statesmen.

On future cooperation with Libya's coming new government, Li said China is willing to participate in the economic life and extend support politically, as the two countries have conducted fruitful cooperation before. Endit
