Chinese company to conduct feasibility study of railway project in Nepal

A Chinese company on Friday made a presentation on feasibility study at Nepal's Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport for the construction of a railway in the South Asian country.

The railway, expected to be 171 kilometers long, will connect the Nepalese capital city Kathmandu to Pokhara, a popular tourist destination in western Nepal.

According to the ministry, the Chinese company - China CAMC Engineering Co. Ltd. - has been asked to conduct the feasibility study, the second of its kind following one done by India's Rites Limited six years ago.

"We began to discuss with the Chinese company on conducting the feasibility study six months ago," said Ananta Acharya, director general of the Department of Railways.

The Chinese team has already visited the field for the feasibility study and is expected to submit a report within three months.

According to the company's preliminary assessment, the proposed railway will have 61 kilometers of tunnels in 24 locations and 34 bridges with a total length of 16.8 kilometers, Acharya said.

He said that according to the plan of Rites Limited, the railway would be as long as 187 kilometers with 107 kilometers of tunnels. Enditem
