Germany's birthrate jumps to 25-year high:Statistics

Xinhua, December 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

The birthrate in Germany in 2014 hits record high since 1990, according to statistics published on Wednesday.

Data released by the German Federal Office for Statistics (Destatis) showed that the total fertility rate in Germany amounted to 1.47 children per woman in 2014, the highest since 1990. In 2013, the figure was under 1.42.

It is the third year in a row that more children are born in all federal states in Germany, according Destatis.

Both women with German citizenship and women holding foreign passports gave birth to more babies last year.

While the birthrate among German women climbed within one year from 1.37 to 1.42, which is a little below the average for all of Germany, the birthrate of women holding foreign passports rose from 1.80 to 1.86, data showed.

With one of the lowest birthrates in the western world, Germany is in dire need of young people to replace the aging baby boomer generation who are about to leave the job market over the coming 15 years. Enditem
