China welcomes IAEA decision to close Iran nuclear weapons probe

China on Wednesday welcomed a resolution adopted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to close the investigation into Iran's alleged nuclear activities, saying it may help implementation of a historic nuclear deal signed in July.

China appreciates the efforts of the IAEA and Iran in solving the issue, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said at a regular press briefing.

After a 12-year investigation of Iran's suspected nuclear plans, board members of the IAEA on Tuesday adopted the resolution to close the so-called possible military dimensions (PMDs) case for Tehran's nuclear program.

On July 14, Iran reached the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with the "P5+1," namely Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States and Germany, over its controversial nuclear program after more than 18 months of marathon talks.

Under the deal, all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran will be lifted if the Islamic republic is proved to abide by the deal over the next 10 years.

Hong said preparations to implement the agreement are progressing well, adding that the P5+1 and Iran had demonstrated their support for the deal with concrete actions.

China hopes to work with other parties to advance preparations for early implementation of the JCPOA, said the spokesperson. Endi
