A new university science park for medicine, the largest of its kind in Slovakia, was opened at the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) in Bratislava on Tuesday.
The scientists working in the new centre in the Bratislava area of Patronka are set to conduct research into heart disease, diabetes, obesity, autoimmune diseases and cancer.
"This kind of centre makes sense not only for science, but also for the health of people in Slovakia," SAV head Pavol Sajgalik said.
The research in the facility will employ advanced therapies, such as stem cell use and the development of state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures.
Covering an area of 18,000 square metres, the new facility will bring together research and innovation and the business sphere.
Up to 500 researchers will be able to work in the new park, which had a price tag of 39.5 million euros (about 43 million U.S. dollars). Over 33.6 million euros of this was covered from EU funds, the remainder came from the state budget. (1 euro = 1.09 U.S. dollars) Endit
