Eurozone employment hits six-year high in Q3

Xinhua, December 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Seasonally-adjusted employment in 19-country eurozone in the third quarter this year rose by 0.3 percent compared with the previous quarter, edging up to a six-year's high, official data showed on Tuesday.

In the wider 28-member European Union (EU), employment also saw a quarterly increase of 0.4 percent. The figures suggested that the bloc's labor market continued to recover despite doing so at quite a slow pace.

A total of 151.5 million people in the single currency bloc were employed from July to September, and the number reached 229.8 million across the continent, EU's statistical agency Eurostat said in a press release.

Year-on-year, growth in employment accelerated to 1.1 percent in the eurozone, after an advance of 1.0 percent in the second quarter and 0.9 percent for the first three months of 2015.

Among member states, there was a notable improvement in Estonia, where employment rose by 2.1 percent, compared with the previous quarter. Hungary, Ireland, Spain, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom followed in employment growth.

However, falls were recorded in three countries. Croatia saw a decrease of 0.6 percent and employment in Portugal and Malta declined 0.5 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively. Endit
