Zambia to contract 275 mln USD loan from China for construction of police houses

The Zambian cabinet on Tuesday approved the contraction of a 275 million U.S. dollars loan from the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China for the construction of houses for the police and other security wings.

The loan will go towards supporting the implementation of the design and construction of over 2,000 houses for the Zambia Police, Immigration Department and Zambia Prison Service, according to a statement released after a cabinet meeting held on Monday.

"The loan is intended to provide financial resources required for the implementation of the project to ease and mitigate the housing shortage within the security wings. Improved housing conditions and general living conditions for security personnel will consequently lead to enhanced security and job opportunities for local residents during the construction period," the statement said.

The Zambia security wings face a housing deficit of 12,000.

In October, Zambian President Edgar Lungu launched the construction of the first 48 houses for the security wings in Lusaka, the country's capital.

The total cost of the construction of houses is 320 million dollars.

Meanwhile, the Zambian government also approved the contraction of another loan amounting to 65 million dollars from the World Bank for girls' education and empowerment of women.

The statement said the contraction of the loan is meant to support the implementation of girls' education and women's empowerment in order to enable them contribute to the development of the country. Endit
