Petitions for postal votes rise ahead of Spanish elections

Xinhua, December 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Some 783,000 Spaniards have asked for a postal vote ahead of the general election which will be held on Sunday, Dec. 20, it was reported Tuesday.

The Spanish Post Office (Correos) confirmed the petitions received were around 14 percent higher than in the last general election held in November 2011.

The date of the election, at the start of the Christmas holidays is a problem for many voters, many of whom may have already begun their holidays.

In order to ensure people are able to register their vote in the middle of the Christmas period, Correos have taken on over 2,000 extra temporary workers, as well as extending shifts for full-time employees.

However, there is a danger people will be unable to cast their vote before the Dec. 16 deadline, considering long queues in post offices dealing with holiday packages and election papers. Endit
