Abbas reshuffles Palestinian consensus gov't despite Hamas opposition

Xinhua, December 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas reshuffled the Palestinian consensus government on Monday by appointing three new ministers, according to an official news report.

New ministers of justice, culture and social welfare were sworn in before President Abbas at the Ramallah headquarters of the Palestinian National Authority, according to the Palestinian state-run news agency WAFA.

In late August, the consensus government underwent another reshuffle, which saw the addition of five new joint portfolios between Abbas and Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah.

The Islamic Hamas movement, however, opposes the current consensus government reshuffle, despite an agreement with Abbas in June of 2014 on the formation of the consensus government.

When the consensus government was formed over a year ago, Palestinians hoped it would terminate the endless discord between Hamas and Abbas's Fatah Party, but continuous complex divisions have maintained and led to internal disputes. Endit
