British astronaut to travel to International Space Station

Xinhua, December 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

British astronaut of the European Space Agency(ESA) Tim Peake will embark on his journey to the space on Tuesday morning after years of training, according to British government sources and a museum which will hold celebration events for the flight.

Tim Peake will become Britain's first official astronaut to visit the International Space Station(ISS) if his mission, which will start from a launch center in Kazakhstan at 11:03 a.m. (GMT) on Tuesday, becomes successful.

He is expected to carry out a comprehensive science programme on ISS, with five other astronauts. Peake will spend about six months to live and work there.

Peake, who also works with UK Space Agency, will help Britain build a strong programme of science. For example, his flight is expected to expand Britain's international competitiveness in health research, innovative materials and processes, or help the country to achieve important scientific results in plasma physics, exobiology or bone and muscle research.

The astronaut will also take part in a mission to inspire and educate British students and schoolchildren.

World Museum will hold celebration events for the astronaut with 300 primary school children on Tuesday, who will be watching the live broadcast of the rocket launch before taking part in a series of interactive activities designed to teach them about life on the ISS, and the fascinating science behind human space flight.
