The Chinese research vessel Dayang Yihao (Ocean No. 1) departed from the city of Qingdao in east China's Shandong Province on Saturday, kicking off the country's 39th oceanic expedition mission.

The 205-day, 20,000-nautical-mile voyage will take the vessel to the Indian Ocean to conduct a series of oceanic surveys on polymetallic sulphide, bio-resources and the environment, said Li Huaiming, chief scientist of the 254-strong expedition team.

Researchers will carry out geological exploration in 19 blocks with an area of 1,900 square kilometers in southwestern Indian Ocean.

The vessel is scheduled return to Qingdao on July 8, 2016. Endi
