Spanish Civil Guards in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on the north coast of Morocco on Saturday arrested a 34-year-old man accused of trying to recruit youngsters for DAESH (Islamic State) the Interior Ministry reports.
The man arrested is confirmed as having Spanish nationality and was in contact with radicals in the city. He is accused of attempting to radicalize and recruit youngsters with the idea of them then traveling to fight for DAESH in Syria, as well as offering them help with their travel plans.
After having made contact with possible recruits the man used the internet to maintain contact with them and to help further radicalize their beliefs. He is also thought to have used a cultural center in Ceuta in order to make contact with possible recruits.
The detainee was known in the town for his ultra-conservative 'Salafist' beliefs and maintained contact with other Salafists both in Ceuta and Morocco.
The Interior Ministry say the man came to their attention after discovering the plans of a youngster to travel to Syria and investigating the possible departure of several others.
This is the fourth operation against DAESH recruitment networks in December and follows the arrest of a man in Pamplona and two prisoners in the Basque region at the start of the month and the arrest of two more suspects in Catalonia and Las Palmas last week, taking the total of detentions for the year to over 90.
