Chile football coach Sampaoli to stay on despite rumors

Xinhua, December 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

The coach of Chiles national soccer team, Argentinean Jorge Sampaoli, on Friday dismissed media rumors that he plans to quit the team.

According to local daily La Tercera, Sampaoli was rumored to announce his resignation Friday, after the head of the national soccer federation pleaded guilty in the U.S. to corruption.

Chile's National Association of Professional Football (ANFP) issued a statement Friday with Sampaoli's declaration.

In the statement, Sampaoli said, "I have repeatedly said I am waiting until Jan. 4, when the new authorities of the ANFP will be elected."

He added, "once the authorities are legally appointed, I will talk with them to define the terms of my work, in keeping with the contract I signed."

"Obviously, I will also present them with my project for the years ahead, hoping it will also be approved by the new officials," said Sampaoli.  Endi
