Three killed in central Philippine firefight, NPA clash

Two New People's Army (NPA) rebels and a soldier were killed while another soldier was injured following a firefight in central Philippine province of Negros Occidental on Friday morning.

Ray Tiongson, public affairs officer of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, said the operating troops also recovered at the encounter site several war materiel left behind by the fleeing rebels.

Tingson said forces from the Army's 79th Infantry Battalion, were conducting community patrol at Sitio Bugtong Lubi in barangay Damutan in Hinobaan town at around 7:40 a.m. when they encountered about 12 rebels.

He said the two sides traded fires for about 15 minutes, after which the rebel group withdrew and left behind the bodies of their two slain comrades whose names are yet to be revealed by the military.

The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign against the government in the countryside for four decades. Military estimates the NPA strength at more than 4,000 men scattered in more than 60 guerrilla fronts throughout the country. Endit
