France team suspends striker Benzema indefinitely

Xinhua, December 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Karim Benzema has been indefinitely suspended from the French national soccer team because of criminal charges of involvement in a sex-tape blackmail attempt against teammate Mathieu Valbuena.

French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet announced on Thursday that the Real Madrid striker was suspended indefinitely from the France set-up.

Benzema, 27, is the leading scorer among all current French internationals with 27 goals from 81 caps.

He runs the risk of a five-year prison sentence and has been ordered not to have contact with Valbuena.

Le Graet called the decision "heartbreaking".

France will host the European Championship next summer.  Endi
