Austrian NGOs ask for 32.1 mln euro aid to tackle migrant crisis

Xinhua, December 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Austrian aid agencies have applied for a total 32.1 million euros (35.4 million U.S. dollars) in government aid to tackle the refugee crisis since September, the APA news agency reported Wednesday citing interior ministry.

The ministry said the NGOs give notification of their costs in tackling the crisis on the fifth day of each month, and are reimbursed for the previous month. It added this arrangement is expected to continue into 2016.

September saw the highest spending up to now with 14.5 million euros, falling to 10.5 million euros in October and 7.1 million euros in November.

A wide range of NGOs have applied for the governmental aid, with the largest sums going to the Austrian Red Cross, Catholic church-based Caritas, and the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund.

Costs covered by the aid include staff and administrative costs as well as food, medical care, and accommodation in emergency quarters, with the total amount also dependant on the number of refugees cared for in the given month. (1 euro=1.10 U.S. dollar) Enditem
