German cabinet approves draft bill to improve refugee data collection

Xinhua, December 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

The German cabinet approved on Wednesday a draft bill designed to simplify the registration and identification of refugees coming to Germany.

According to the bill, refugees will receive a uniform identity card in the future as they enter Germany. The card issued by German authorities contains relevant data of every asylum seeker, including his/her health information, data on accompanying minor children and adolescents as well as education, vocational training and other qualifications.

"Without this card, there will be no asylum-seeker benefits and no asylum procedure in the future," said German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere.

German authorities, de Maiziere added, will collect standardized data in a central system at their first meetings with refugees. The information collected are available uniformly to all public authorities, which have regular contacts with asylum seekers.

With the new law, the German government wants to prevent double registrations and improve data exchange regarding the influx of refugees. It is set to come into force on February 1. Endit
