A Palestinian man was shot and killed Wednesday after he stabbed and wounded two Israeli men in the West Bank city of Hebron, Israeli officials said.
The incident, the latest in a two-month-long wave of Israeli-Palestinian violence, took place in Beit Hadassah, a Jewish settlement compound in Hebron.
A military spokesperson said that "an assailant stabbed two Israelis" and was shot by troops at the scene. Police spokeswoman, Luba Samri, later confirmed the stabber was dead.
Hebron has been a frequent flashpoint during the recent spate of violence. About 850 Jewish settlers live in the city under heavy Israeli guard, surrounded by tens of thousands of Palestinians.
On Tuesday, Israeli soldiers shot and killed Malik Akram Shahin, 19, during a pre-dawn raid to detain Palestinian suspects in the refugee camp of Dheisheh, south of Bethlehem. In clashes that ensued in Bethlehem after the teen's funeral, two Palestinian youths were shot and injured by Israeli soldiers.
The violence was triggered by increasing visits of far-right Israelis to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, a site in East Jerusalem holy to both Muslims and Jews. The unrest then quickly spread throughout the West Bank, Israel, and the Gaza Strip.
Israeli forces killed more than 110 Palestinians since the violence started in September, most of them died as they were trying to carry out stabbing attacks against Israelis, according to Israeli officials. Palestinians killed 19 Israelis and one U.S. national. Endit
