Passage of Bangsamoro law more imperative amid terror threats: Philippine president

Xinhua, December 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III on Tuesday underscored the importance of passing the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) in the wake of threats from terrorists.

Aquino met with congressmen at the presidential palace to get their support on the passage of the pending measure.

"He (Aquino) said passing the BBL now has become more imperative in view of the increased threats posed by global terrorism and radicalization," Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. told reporters.

He said Aquino called on lawmakers to "seize the historic opportunity" of enacting the BBL and laying the foundations for long-term peace.

The proposed BBL, once enacted into law, will pave the way for the establishment of a new Bangsamoro political entity that will replace the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

The passage of the bill is part of the peace deal signed last year by the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the largest Muslim rebel group in the country. Endit
