One migrant killed in Calais camp in northern France

Xinhua, December 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

A migrant was killed overnight on Tuesday after being stabbed in Calais camp, north France, according to local reports.

A man lost his life after being hit in his neck during a knife attack overnight, Jean-Pierre Valensi, Boulogne-sur-Mer prosecutor was quoted as saying by local media.

A probe for murder was opened, he added.

The new victim in Calais "jungle", referring to the migrants camp in the northern French port city, was a 25-year-old Sudanese man who was among the thousands of migrants hoping to reach Britain to have a better life.

Since June 1, a dozen migrants in Calais died while passing through the Eurotunnel.

About 4,500 migrants from Syria, Iraq and African countries are camping outside the northern French city. They were risking their lives by trying to board lorries and trains heading to Britain.

In August, France said it would build a camp this winter for as many as 1,500 migrants. It also said it would take in 30,000 refugees over the next two years. Endit
