Thai police clear overstaying Syrians of IS connection

Xinhua, December 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

Thai authorities have detected no connection between four Syrian nationals, who have overstayed their visas in Thailand, and the Islamic State (IS) militant group, police said Tuesday.

Investigators have found no evidence that could link the four detained Syrian males with the IS, deputy spokesperson of Thai police Piyaphand Pingmuang was quoted by the National News Bureau of Thailand as saying.

Charges have been filed against the Syrians for overstaying their visas, Piyaphand said, adding the authorities are now in the process of deporting them back to Syria.

Thai authorities have stepped up security measures in all parts of the country following earlier reports that 10 IS-associated Syrian nationals had entered Thailand and split to varied spots. Enditem
