Colombia's FARC asks Red Cross for help to free kidnapped soldier

Xinhua, December 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrilla group asked the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Monday to help release a solider who was kidnapped on Nov. 25 in Colombia's southwestern region.

"We express our willingness to free solider (Jesus Angel) Rojas Delgado but for that we request the cooperation of the ICRC," a statement of the rebel group released on Monday said.

According to the statement, the solider was conducting intelligence work in a rural area of San Vicente del Caguan in Colombia's southwestern region.

The rebel group also said that they reject the intelligence work carried out by the army, as "such practices endanger the lives of their soldiers, but also undermine the unilateral ceasefire," the statement added.

The solider, 20, voluntarily enrolled in the army to get his military card and complete the mandatory military service to get a job, according to the country's daily El Tiempo.

The FARC guerrillas and the Colombian government are in the last months of a peace process seeking to end the 50-year-long armed conflict in the country, and the peace agreement is expected to be signed by March 2016. Endi
