Profile: Azeri President Ilham Aliyev

Azeri President Ilham Aliyev will pay a four-day visit to China from Tuesday to Friday at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Born on Dec. 24, 1961, Aliyev had entered the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 1977, earning a master's degree in international relations and an associate PhD degree in history, before he lectured at the institute until 1990.

During 1994-1996, he was appointed successively vice president and first vice president of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan. In 1995 and 2000, he was elected to the National Assembly, and became president of the National Olympic Committee in 1997.

In 2001, Aliyev became head of the Azeri delegation to the Council of Europe, then deputy speaker of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in 2003.

In August 2003, he was appointed prime minister. Two months later, Aliyev was elected president. He was re-elected president in 2008 and 2013 respectively. Moreover, he was elected as the ruling New Azerbaijan Party chairman in 2005.

Aliyev is fluent in Russian, Turkish, English and French. He is married and has a son and two daughters. Endi
