India Monday said its External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will travel to Pakistan to attend an international conference on Afghanistan.
"@SushmaSwaraj to lead Indian delegation for Heart of Asia 5th Ministerial Meeting on Afghanistan on December 9 in Islamabad," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted.
Sources said that Swaraj is likely to meet her Pakistani counterpart Sartaj Aziz on the sidelines of the conference, which will be a major boost for bilateral relations.
The Indian External Affairs Minister's decision to go to Pakistan came a day after both countries held National Security Advisor-level talks in Bangkok, in a dramatic turn of events.
A joint statement issued after the Bangkok meeting said that India's Ajit Doval and Pakistan's Naseer Khan Janjua held discussions "in a candid, cordial and constructive atmosphere".
"Discussions covered peace and security, terrorism, Jammu and Kashmir, and other issues including tranquility along the LoC (Line of Control)," the statement said.
"Both were guided by the vision of the two leaders for a peaceful, stable and prosperous South Asia. It was agreed to carry forward the constructive engagement," it added.
The National Security Advisor-level talks came days after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Paris on the sidelines of Climate Change Summit. Endit
