UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Saturday urged the world to make the most of the power of volunteerism to build a more sustainable world and a life of dignity for all.
In his message in observing the International Volunteer Day this year, which fell on Saturday, Ban noted that the newly-adopted sustainable development goals offer an opportunity for individuals to show solidarity through volunteerism, saying "all of us can contribute to realizing the 2030 Agenda's vision of ending poverty."
UN Member states has adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September, outlining 17 goals with 169 specific targets which basically redefine how the world works together to end poverty, promote prosperity and combat climate change.
"Volunteering fosters creativity, draws strength from our passions and connects us to those who need us most," said Ban. "Volunteers embody the fundamental values of commitment, inclusiveness, civic engagement and a sense of solidarity."
"As we mark International Volunteer Day, let us strive to make the most of the power of volunteerism to build a more sustainable world and a life of dignity for all," he said.
The International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development is observed on Dec. 5 annually worldwide. This year's theme is "The world is changing. Are you? Volunteer!" Endit
