Malaysian anti-corruption body records statement from PM over political funds

Xinhua, December 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Malaysia's anti-corruption body said Saturday that its officials had recorded a statement from Prime Minister Najib Razak over the issue related to nearly 700 million U.S. dollars in his personal accounts.

The Malaysian Anti-corruption Commission said in a statement that the prime minister was cooperative during the two and a half hours meeting.

Najib has been under pressure following reports by The Wall Street Journal earlier this year that some 700 million U.S. dollars had been channeled into his personal accounts via controversial state investment fund 1Malaysia Development Bhd., or 1MDB, and its subsidiaries.

Najib has denied any wrongdoing.

His deputy Ahmad Zahid Hamid told parliament this week that the fund was legal political donations.
