Georgian government deprives ex-president of citizenship

Xinhua, December 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili signed a decree on Friday, terminating Georgian citizenship of his predecessor Mikheil Saakashvili, who is now the governor of Odessa region in Ukraine.

The Georgian President's office said Friday that citizenship of Saakashvili and several other nationals were terminated with the Dec. 4 decree as they have become citizens of foreign countries.

Saakashvili was granted Ukrainian citizenship in late May, when Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko appointed him as governor of Odessa.

The Georgian Justice Ministry said in late October that it launched proceedings for termination of Saakashvili's Georgian citizenship after receiving an official confirmation from Ukraine of his new citizenship.

According to Georgian legislation, a national loses Georgian citizenship after acquiring one of a foreign country. Endi
