Iceland sees increase in foreign visitor overnight stays in October

Iceland saw a year-on-year increase of 40 percent in the number of foreigners who stayed overnight in hotels in October, official figures showed on Friday.

According to statistics issued by Statistics Iceland, the number of people who paid for accommodations in Icelandic hotels rose to 238,047 in October, a 30 percent increase compared with October 2014.

Meanwhile, foreign tourists accounted for 88 percent of the people who stayed in Icelandic hotels in October, up 40 percent compared with the figure in October 2014. The number of Icelandic citizens staying overnight in hotels decreased 12 percent over the same period.

Foreigners who stayed overnight in Iceland in October were mostly residents from Britain, the United States and Germany.

In the last 12 months, from November 2014 until October 2015, overnight stays in hotels were 2,718,740, which is an increase of around 20 percent compared with the same period of the previous year. Endit
