Algerian president rushed to France for medical check-up

Xinhua, December 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika was rushed to France on Thursday for medical check-up, the President's Office said in a statement.

The source specified that it is "a short visit to France to undergo periodical medical check-ups."

Rumors were circulating last week on social media that the ailing president had been admitted into a hospital in France. However, Bouteflika, 78, showed up shortly after on a state-owned TV channel receiving the visiting Maltese prime minister.

Bouteflika suffered a transient ischemic attack in April 2013. He was evacuated to Val-de-Grace military hospital before being transferred to the Institution des Invalides for convalescence and rehabilitation.

Since then, Bouteflika has hardly made public appearances due to his health conditions, while the opposition parties have been calling him to resign and convene early elections.

Bouteflika came to power in 1999, and was reelected for a fourth term in April 2014. Endit
